Kata 1-5

Kata 1-5 consist of Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan and Heian Godan.

Heian Kata

Heian roughly means Peaceful Mind and the kata series consists of five kata: Heian Shodan, Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, Heian Yondan and Heian Godan.

Heian Kata was created in 1901 by Anko Itosu when he introduced karate to Okinawan schools.

Anko Itosu felt that the Kata were too advanced for young students and these had previously been secret. Anko Itosu created Heian kata by extracting parts from above all Kanku Dai and the now forgotten kata Channan. The five Heian katas are very pedagogically laid out so they are great for learning in sequence. Stances and techniques are introduced in order and the degree of difficulty increases gradually.
